What is the IP

Do you wonder what the numbers on the label on the back of your wireless router mean?

That is the private Internet Protocol (IP) address of your device. Your network has two IPs. The public one is assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and it is used to identify the network among all others across the internet. The private one is assigned by default by the manufacturer of your router. The device uses to build a personal network at your home or office. In this case, becomes the backbone of that network.

How to Login to your router with IP address

When you connect a device to your Wi-Fi, it gets a private IP that is related to the router’s one. For example, if you connect your phone first, it will have the private IP. The laptop comes second, and it will get and so on. Your router uses these private IP addresses to identify where requests for data come from within the network. Then it uses the public IP to communicate with websites and services outside the network. Lastly, once the data packages arrive, the router sends them back to the private IP that made the initial request.

If you want to fine-tune your network or resolve an issue you are having, you can do that by using the IP address. For that purpose you need to follow several simple steps:

1)     Connect your device to the Wi-Fi. Better yet, you can connect a laptop or a desktop PC directly to the router using an Ethernet cable. In that way, you will get a more stable connection.

2)     Open up an Internet browser of your choice. Edge, Safari, Chrome, and Opera all work fine.

3)     In the address bar, write and hit enter.

4)     You will find yourself on a page that prompts you to enter the username and password for the router admin panel. Enter them and log in.

The most common usernames and password combinations are set by default by manufacturers and “admin” for username and “admin” for password. If these don’t work, you can look at the label on the back of the device. There you will find the default logins.

Changing the router logins

Your first order of business should be to change the default logins to your router. This will add a layer of protection to your network because otherwise, anyone will be able to enter the admin panel and tinker with it. To do that, look at the menu on the left side of the screen. Go to the Settings tab and find the Network sub-menu. From there, you will be able to change the logins. In the same place, you can even change your router’s private IP from to anything else that follows the pattern of four numbers between 0 and 255. Doing so will further ensure no one except you has access to your router.

After you make these updates, make sure to ping your new IP to make sure everything is working. To ping your router in Windows:

  • Write “cmd” in the search bar in the lower-left corner of your screen to open the Command Prompt.
  • Type “ping” and hit the space bar. Next, type the IP address you’d like to ping. For example -

Fixing Common Problems with

There are a few issues you might run into when configuring or using your wireless router. Most of these are fairly straightforward to resolve and do not require particular technical savvy.

No connection to

The first thing you might want to check is if your router is on. Look at the LED lights on the front of the device – they can tell you a lot about what is going on with your network. The three lights to look at are the Power, Internet Connection, and Wi-Fi ones. Each three of these need to be green and continuously lit. If that isn’t the case with any of them, then the problem is most likely related to the feature they represent. If all LEDs are off, your router isn’t getting power from the grid.

In case the Internet LED on your is either off, or red, that means no internet connection is going into the router. Check if the Ethernet cable is plugged in and if the issue persists, you should contact ISP. The problem is most likely on their end.

Can’t connect to the Wi-Fi of

If you are certain your internet connection is uninterrupted, but you are still having trouble connecting to the router’s Wi-Fi, try switching it off and on again. If the issue persists, you might want to check if some of the Wi-Fi features are disabled from the admin panel of the router. Log in to the Wireless connection tab. If you have recently adjusted the settings, try restoring everything to the defaults. You might also want to check with your ISP if they have all your settings in order on their end.

Unable to log into the router

If the default username and password for your don’t work, or if you have recently changed them and don’t remember the new ones, you might find yourself locked out of your router. To regain access to the device’s admin panel, you might need to do a hard reset. Locate the reset button on the back of your router. Be prepared to use a pin or a needle, because many makes and models require it to carry out the factory reset procedure. Make sure the router is plugged in. Press and hold the reset button for fifteen to thirty seconds, or until the LED lights on the front start blinking. At some point, the lights will turn off. Release the reset button and wait for your to reboot. Now you should be able to log into the admin panel with the default logins at Note that the process wipes out all changes to the network you might have made prior, so you will have to set it up from scratch.
